BEHIND THE SCENES - PART IV : CAIRU' (BRAZIL)

Cairù is the second city founded by the Portuguese in Brazil in 1608. It is currently the only municipality of the islands nearby and it has 8,000 inhabitants, while all the inhabitants of the islands of Tinharè (the largest, where Morro de Sao Paulo is), Cairù and Boipeba, are about 25,000.
In Cairù there is a monastery that can also be visited, which is one of the first monasteries that were created in Brazil. Currently only two monks live there. Cairù history as a colony is something that can still be seen in the Portuguese village atmosphere. There are some colonial houses that are the oldest houses in Brazil, but unfortunately they are in very bad condition. Cairù monastery reminds us Portugal in many things, especially in the rich azulejos.

I went there in a one-day trip during my staying in Morro de Sao Paulo. The child in the photo did not seem to be interested in me, until, as he walked thoughtfully, he turned to me with a unique expression and put his hand over her mouth. It is a unique picture, which captures the poverty and sadness at the same time the dignity of the locals.
